Medical SOS by AMS coordinates an offshore medical evacuation off the coast of Conakry

Medical SOS by AMS recently coordinated a complex offshore medical evacuation for a patient aboard a container ship off the coast of Guinea. From the maritime intervention to hospitalisation at Clinique Pasteur in Conakry, followed by an international medical transfer to Europe, the teams ensured continuity of care throughout the process, adapting to the specific challenges of each stage.

A medical intervention in a challenging environment

When a medical emergency occurs at sea, accessing the patient and transferring them to a healthcare facility requires close coordination between medical, maritime and logistics teams. In this case, the configuration of the container ship made a conventional transfer impossible.

A specific operation was therefore organised to lower the patient by crane from the vessel onto a corvette, before transferring them by sea to Conakry. Every stage was carefully prepared to minimise disruptions in care and ensure that the transfer was carried out under conditions appropriate to the patient’s medical condition.

From offshore evacuation to hospital care: ensuring continuity of care

Upon arrival in Conakry, the patient received medical attention and was subsequently admitted to Clinique Pasteur for the necessary examinations and treatment.

In this type of intervention, the challenge goes beyond extracting a patient from a difficult-to-access environment. It involves organising a comprehensive chain of care: preparing the transfer, coordinating maritime operations, arranging reception onshore, transporting the patient to the healthcare facility and ensuring the transmission of medical information to the receiving teams.

This organisation helps maintain continuity of care for a critically ill patient throughout the process, while allowing the resources deployed to be adapted as the medical situation evolves.

Continuing the patient’s care through to Europe

Following hospitalisation in the intensive care unit at Clinique Pasteur in Conakry, the patient required further specialised treatment. Medical SOS by AMS subsequently arranged an international medical evacuation, in coordination with the insurance network, to the patient’s home country in Europe.

This final stage required further coordination between medical teams, transport providers and the receiving healthcare facility to ensure continuity of care beyond Guinea.

Expertise built on more than 20 years of field experience

This operation demonstrates the ability of Medical SOS by AMS to operate in complex environments and coordinate medical evacuations from start to finish. This expertise draws on more than 20 years of experience developed by AMS supporting industrial and mining sites in Guinea, where emergency response, risk anticipation and continuity of care are essential daily requirements.

Today, Medical SOS makes this experience available to businesses, organisations and individuals, providing 24/7 medical coordination for critical situations, both in Guinea and internationally.

Coordinating every stage of the care pathway

A medical evacuation involves far more than transportation. It requires the ability to assess the situation, mobilise the right stakeholders, anticipate operational challenges and coordinate every stage until the patient reaches the receiving healthcare facility.

From the initial offshore intervention to the transfer to Conakry and the subsequent international evacuation to Europe, this operation reflects the approach of Medical SOS by AMS: a structured, responsive and coordinated medical response focused on patient safety and continuity of care.
